Richard Hellman, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.E. was born in New York. His post-graduate training was interrupted by nearly 2 1/2 years of active duty in the United States Air Force. Following completion of training at the University of Kansas he joined the faculty of the UMKC School of Medicine where he rose to the level of Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Endocrine Programs. He left UMKC in 1981 to design and direct the first comprehensive adult diabetes care program in Kansas City and has continued in private practice since that time.
Dr. Hellman has been an active leader and has contributed to the improvement of medical care, on the local, national and international levels. He attributes his focus on patient care to his mentor at the University of Kansas, the late Mahlon H. Delp, who said there are three things that are paramount in medicine: the care of the patient, the care of the patient and the care of the patient.
He lives with his wife in Kansas. He enjoys a wide variety of music, theater and KU basketball.
